Privacy Policy

How we handle your information, in plain language.

This Privacy Policy is a starting template written to reflect BudgetWise's actual features as of August 2026. It has not been reviewed by a lawyer. Because BudgetWise handles personal financial information, we strongly recommend having this reviewed by qualified legal counsel — particularly for compliance with regulations like GDPR or CCPA if you have users in the EU or California — before relying on it as your operative policy.

Effective date: August 18, 2026

1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how BudgetWise (“BudgetWise,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, and protects your information when you use our website and application (the “Service”). By using BudgetWise, you agree to the collection and use of information as described here.

2. Information We Collect

Account information: your name, email address, and password. Authentication is handled by Supabase; we never see or store your password in plain text.

Financial data you provide: expenses, income, categories, budgets, subscriptions, sinking funds, and investment account balances and holdings you manually enter into the app. BudgetWise does not connect directly to your bank accounts — there is no automatic bank syncing. All financial information is entered by you.

Household data: if you use the Family plan, we store the household name, invited members' emails, and shared budget/category data visible to that household.

Preferences and local data: your currency and theme (light/dark) preferences, and a session token stored in your browser's local storage so you stay signed in.

3. How We Use Your Information

To provide, operate, and maintain the Service — including authenticating you and rendering your budgets, expenses, and other financial data.

To enable household sharing when you use the Family plan.

To send transactional emails, such as household invitations and password reset links.

To maintain the security and integrity of the Service, including detecting and preventing abuse.

To comply with legal obligations where applicable.

4. How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal or financial information to advertisers or data brokers.

We use Supabase as our authentication and database provider, which processes your data on our behalf to operate the Service.

If you're part of a household (Family plan), other members of that household can see shared budgets, categories, and expenses — but not your individually-owned subscriptions, sinking funds, or investment accounts unless the app's sharing design says otherwise for that feature.

We may disclose information if required by law, subpoena, or other legal process, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of BudgetWise, our users, or others.

5. Data Security

Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS) and at rest. Authentication and password handling are managed by Supabase using industry-standard practices. Access to administrative functions is restricted to designated admin accounts.

No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

6. Your Rights and Choices

You can access and update most of your account information directly from Settings within the app.

You can delete your account at any time from Settings, which removes your account and associated data from our systems, except where we're required to retain certain records by law.

7. Data Retention

We retain your information for as long as your account is active, or as needed to provide the Service. If you delete your account, we delete your associated data except where retention is required for legal or security purposes.

8. Children's Privacy

BudgetWise is not directed at, and is not intended for use by, anyone under 18 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

9. International Users

Our infrastructure providers may process and store data in the United States or other countries. By using BudgetWise, you consent to your information being processed in these locations.

10. Cookies and Local Storage

BudgetWise uses your browser's local storage to keep you signed in (a session token) and to remember your theme preference. We do not use third-party advertising or tracking cookies.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We'll post any changes on this page with a revised effective date.
